Karen Xia is a Legal Assistant in the San Francisco office of Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP, a national law firm with offices in the District of Columbia, New York, California, Tennessee, and Maryland. She received her B.A. in economics from Columbia University in the City of New York.
While at Columbia, Karen served as the Editor in Chief of the Columbia Daily Spectator, a financially independent and student-run undergraduate newspaper. As a student journalist, Karen covered various issues within systems of higher education, including compliance with federal mandates, Title IX policies and procedures, and endowment management. She further explored her interest in combatting systemic discrimination as a peer advocate for Columbia’s sexual violence response hotline, providing crisis support for victims of sexual misconduct as a state certified rape crisis counselor.
Karen previously interned at the New York Daily News as a local reporter covering state and federal courts in all five boroughs of New York City. She has also worked at the American Journalism Project, a venture philanthropy organization dedicated to funding local newspapers in underserved regions throughout the nation.
Karen is considering attending law school in the future.
