Fighting Racist Workplace Policies and Practices

Even in this day and age, race discrimination is still a major issue in the United States, especially in the workplace. The racial discrimination lawyers at Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP have been successful in fighting racist policies and practices for decades. The clients we have successfully represented range from African-American restaurant servers to the former president and CEO of GE Aviation Materials.

What is Racial Discrimination?

According to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, it is illegal for an employer to discriminate against an employee because of his/her race in hiring, firing, discipline, distribution of benefits, promotion, compensation, job training, or any other condition of employment. Some examples of race discrimination include:

  • Despite having excellent references and experience, you are not hired for a job because you are an African-American.
  • Someone who is white is promoted to a manager position despite having less experience or seniority than you, a Latino.
  • You make less money even though employees who have been with the company for less time make more money.
  • You’re being harassed by co-workers who call you the “n-word” or tell insulting jokes about your race.

Current Race Discrimination Cases

Some of the current cases our racial discrimination lawyers are working on include:

  • Representing African-American deputy US Marshals who had served the government from 1992 to the present in their hiring, pay, and promotion claims against the government agency.
  • Representing a class of racial minorities in their pay, promotion, and hostile work environment claims against John Elway auto dealerships in California.

Race Discrimination Successes

  • In 2004, Sanford Heisler Sharp Chairman David Sanford served as lead counsel in a racial discrimination class action against the restaurant chain Cracker Barrel. In representing the NAACP and the Cracker Barrel employees and customers, Mr. Sanford got a historic settlement of $8.7 million. This was the only race discrimination case that was intervened in by the George W. Bush administration.
  • Sanford Heisler Sharp, LLP represented Marc Thomas, the president and CEO of General Electric Aviation Materials. Thomas along with other GE African-American executives alleged racial discrimination in pay and promotions. The case was settled for undisclosed terms.
