Fraud Is Not Uncommon: What Are Your Options?
Workers are often privy to inside information and may be aware of wrongdoing by their employers. Such wrongdoing may involve fraudulent actions against the government, such as customs fraud. These activities may violate the federal False Claims Act and other laws – and the U.S. Government has a vested interest in stopping such illegal behavior.
What Are Whistleblowers To Do With This Information?
The process of coming forward as a whistleblower is intimidating and may be overwhelming. But there are many reasons why speaking out is important.
Whistleblowers are protected by the False Claims Act and similar laws, which can shield them from retaliation by their employer and allow for monetary compensation. You may find it advantageous to work with a law firm that has specific experience in this area – in particular, a firm that has experience handling high-stakes, multimillion-dollar qui tam cases.
At Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight, we are interested in speaking with potential whistleblowers throughout the U.S., including major trade hubs like New York, Newark, Washington, DC, Charleston, Savannah, Miami, San Diego, Los Angeles, Oakland, Seattle, Houston, El Paso and New Orleans.
Washington, DC-based Vince McKnight, Co-Chair of Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight’s Whistleblower and Qui Tam Practice Group, was named by his peers to the 2024 Best Lawyers list for qui tam law. In addition to representing the executive who exposed Wells Fargo’s “fake account” scheme, resulting in $3.5 billion in penalties against the bank, Vince has recovered tens of millions of dollars in whistleblower settlements for violations of the False Claims Act and the Trade Agreements Act, as well as for whistleblowers exposing corporate malfeasance. Vince currently serves as Chairman of the Board of The Anti-Fraud Coalition, a Washington DC non-profit organization that raises awareness of whistleblower law and supports whistleblowers.

Temple St. Clair–$796,000 Settlement
In June 2018, Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight helped settle a customs fraud case against luxury jeweler Temple St. Clair, in what is thought to be the first case in New York to recover money for the U.S. Government based on a defendant’s failure to properly mark its products with their country of origin.
The Importance Of Acting Quickly
There are a range of reasons why you may want to act quickly when you become aware of wrongdoing by your employer, including that:
- The False Claims Act has a public disclosure bar, meaning you would not be rewarded if you relay information that is already in the public domain.
- The False Claims Act also has a first-to-file element, meaning that if you are not the first whistleblower to report the wrongdoing and your information is consistent with what has already been relayed to the government, you might not be rewarded.
